Destination
Sebago Lake, Maine by Frank Weaver
Maine
is known as "Vacationland" and Sebago Lake is one of the top vacation destinations
in the state of Maine. The name Sebago (Sa-bay-go) comes from the Native
American Indians; it means "great stretch of water." Just 37 km (23 miles)
Northwest of Portland, Maine and setting at the foot of the White Mountains,
it's the deepest lake in the State of Maine at 96 meters (316 feet). Sebago
Lake is Maine's second largest lake almost 12.8 km (8 miles) wide and 16.1
km (10 miles) long.
| Located
on the North Shore of Sebago Lake is the 1,400 acre Sebago Lake State Park
with its sandy beaches, boating, walking trails and picnic areas. This
is home to a variety plants and animals. Sebago Lake State Park was open
in 1938 and is one of the original five state parks in Maine.
If
cruising on Sebago Lake is your way to relax, in summer the Songo River
Queen II a replica of a Mississippi Paddle Wheeler travels through the
Songo Lock connecting Sebago Lake with Long Lake in Naples, Maine. For
great fishing Sebago Lake is known for its land-locked salmon, smelt, lake
trout, along with large and small mouth bass. Hiking and exploring can
be an adventure at nearby Douglas Mountain Preserve. The Preserve has many
trails, and picnic areas. The view from the summit of this 417 meter (1,382
foot) mountain is spectacular. Douglas Mountain is considered to be ranked
as the 640th tallest mountain in the State of Maine. |

a more family summer vacation there is Point Sebago Resort, a 770 acre
resort on Sebago Lake offering boat and slip rentals, an 18 Hole Champion
Golf Course, tennis, horseshoes, beach and lake access, along with family
entertainment.
A drive
around Sebago Lake can be a journey for Maine crafts and gifts from some
of Maine's most talented artisans; in addition you will find many local
restaurants. For a real Maine meal start with a bowl of New England clam
chowder, this creamy base chowder with diced potatoes, bacon, onions and
clams, served with small hexagonal crackers is usually available on Fridays.
Follow this with a Lobster roll, a sandwich of lobster meat tossed in mayonnaise
and severed on a grilled roll like a hotdog roll and can be served with
potato chips or French fries. End the meal with a Whoopi Pie for desert,
an American desert consisting of two round shaped chocolate cakes with
a creamy frosting between them. Whoopi Pies are considered the official
state treat of Maine.
