Attractions - Diamond Head Crater by James C
Hawaii
is a fantastic place to visit. There are not many places that can match
the beauty of the Hawaiian islands. Tourists have an endless supply of
attractions and destinations to visit in Hawaii. If you are trying to choose
which ones to see during your stay there is one that should be at the top
of the list. That attraction is the Diamond Head Crater. It is a place
that you will talk about for years to come. Keep reading and learn about
this favorite Hawaiian destination.
The
Diamond Head Crater is considered a sacred site to Hawaiians. According
to the legend Hi'iaka who is the sister to Pele the volcano goddess named
the mountain Leahi after the yellow fin tuna which she thought the mountain
resembled. Later Kamehameha built a structure on top of the mountain where
sacrifices were made to the god of war Ku. The mountain later became known
as Diamondhead when some British sailors found what they though were diamonds
on the mountain. They were found to not be diamonds but the name was here
to stay.
Be
aware that this is an attraction that does require some work on the part
of visitors. It requires you to ascend a 560 foot trail which will take
you almost a half an hour to complete. It is well worth the effort though.
Once you reach the top you will be treated to a 360 degree view of the
island and it is breathtaking. You will kick yourself if you do not bring
a camera.
If
you would like to visit the Diamond Head Crater while in Hawaii you can
find it on Diamond Head Road. If you would like to get current information
or direction you can call an information line at 808-948-3299. It is open
daily from 6AM until 6PM. I hope you go, you will definitely find it worthwhile.
