Perfect Holiday in Portugal
Portugal has long been a favourite
holiday destination for people from all walks of life – from couples and
families to individuals and groups, this sunny European country has an
established tourist trade that is well practiced in catering for the needs
of young and old alike.
Portugal Holiday Options
While traditionally Portugal
is often viewed as a “beach” destination and therefore a summer destination,
there is so much more to the country than just this. Some Portugal holiday
options on offer include:
-
City Breaks – the Portuguese
capital of Lisbon is a wonderful choice for a short break with friends
or loved ones. With its rich history, quaint old town and cobbled streets
juxtaposed against a thriving and cosmopolitan cafe culture you won’t be
bored. Wander through the city and see the fantastic facades of the old
buildings, or check out the many museums and galleries for a little bit
of cultural input.
-
Interior Explorations
– while the Portuguese coasts are popular with visitors, few venture into
the interior of the country, which is well worth a visit in its own right.
Portugal
car hire deals will allow you to explore the less well trodden paths,
seeing the lush forests, mountain valleys and imposing granite massifs
that add a whole new layer to the Portuguese experience.
-
Beach Breaks – the potential
for a great Portugal holiday on a beach break can’t and shouldn’t be ignored.
The established resorts of the Algarve are a delight, with everything holidaymakers
could wish for, while those preferring not to follow the herd may wish
to head for the stretch of Atlantic coast between Lisbon and Oporto, which
boast its own stunning sands and a laid back atmosphere.
Portugal Travel Tips
Portugal is very used to
welcoming visitors from other countries and cultures and established resorts
will expect guest to bring their own customs with them. However, if you
intend to travel away from the more touristy areas it is a good idea to
have a basic understanding of what might be expected of you in terms of
etiquette. Observing these few local customs can help you to fit
in and find common ground with your hosts:
-
Tipping – tipping is
not expected in Portugal, although it is practiced and will not offend.
Tip only good service, and only for meals. Rounding the bill up to the
nearest Euro is a good rule of thumb in most establishments, while a few
Euros will suffice in even the most sophisticated venues.
-
Eating – when invited
to eat wait to be seated by your host, never attack your plate before the
host has wished you “bom apetite” and remember that the Portuguese use
cutlery for all courses – even cheese and fruit. Napkins should be left
on the left side of your plate while eating and not laid in the lap – at
the end of the meal move your napkin to the right.
-
Driving – if travelling from
the UK, India, or Australasia remember that, in Portugal they drive on
the right!
