Barbados Weather
by Steve Valentino
Although
November and May are the prime times to visit Barbados, this island is
warm and full of sunshine throughout the year. The average daytime temperature
on this island is 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. There is a slight chill
at night.
The northeast trade winds
lower the intensity of the heat. Usually there are quick showers
of rain from January to June; otherwise, the season is almost dry. Between
July and December there are possibilities of sudden short showers.
Although there are fabulous
tropical rains, the island is very absorbent and the underground lakes
and the sea quickly absorb the strong rains. Barbados is rarely hit by
hurricanes, but in 1955, Barbados suffered a direct hit. In 1898
and 1831 there were other recorded hurricanes which hit the island. According
to the weather specialists the island gets brushed or hit every 3.09 years,
and it gets a direct hit once every 26.6 years.
The storm history of Barbados
says that Hurricane Edna strengthened slowly and followed the shape of
the Caribbean islands, and never shifted more than 100 miles away from
the island. This devastating Edna hit a shore that had already been devastated
by Hurricane Carol just a few days earlier. Fortunately, Edna's strongest
winds were too far offshore. As the hurricane moved over the cooler water
of the north it became weak.
Compared to other Caribbean
islands, Barbados has the most pleasant weather, attracting thousands of
tourists every year. So if anyone wishes to have a judicious mix of both
cold and hot seasons then Barbados is definitely the right choice.
